Compensation Details

Starting salary is dependent on education, directly related experience and internal equity.  After completing the second probationary semester, the potential exists to earn additional compensation by teaching overload and spring/summer sessions.  This additional compensation varies based on several factors, including educational level and step.  For example, a faculty member with a Master’s degree at Step 0 who teaches 10 hours of overload during the fall and winter semesters would earn an additional $18,000.  Teaching during the spring/summer sessions would also generate additional compensation beyond the base salary.  Excellent benefits package.  Click here to view our benefits summary.

Position Summary

Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job:
Faculty facilitate student learning and initiate and participate in efforts to consistently improve the level of student success. As learning facilitators, faculty consistently assess learning outcomes and their own teaching effectiveness (pedagogy). As professionals, faculty adhere to the ethical standards of their profession as outlined, for example, by the NEA and the State of Michigan. Where applicable, faculty maintain licensure and certifications. In addition, full-time faculty have the following key responsibilities which are described more fully in the Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities section of the job description:

Specific Teaching Assignment:
Faculty member will be responsible for teaching classes in advanced manufacturing related fields in Machining, CNC, CAD/CAM.

And there is potential for teaching classes in related areas if the faculty member has appropriate skills and credentials, areas such as Metallurgy, Materials, Fluid Power, Robotics, Precision Measurement, Industrial Safety and Quality Assurance. Many of these fields are part of the Mechanical Operations Technology program. Faculty will not be responsible to teach in all the related fields.

Minimum Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
1. Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Manufacturing, Machining, Mechanical, Applied Technology, Industrial/Technical or Engineering or a related field (Related fields should include 30 credit hours of related coursework.).
a. OR Bachelor’s Degree with a Manufacturing related Associate’s Degree
b. OR Bachelor’s Degree with 30 credit hours in manufacturing related courses.
c. OR Bachelor’s Degree and advanced professional credential as a Machining Journeyperson or Tool and Die Journeyperson, or Die Maker Journeyperson.
d. OR Associate’s Degree in the field and 10 years of (full-time equivalency) practical experience in the Mechanical field and advanced professional credential as a Machining Journeyperson or Tool and Die Journeyperson, or Die Maker Journeyperson. (If you do not have a Bachelor’s Degree, then you must be willing to enroll and make continuous progress toward the completion of a Bachelor’s degree within 5 years.)
e. Bachelor’s Degree must be from an accredited institution.*
2. Two (2) years (full-time equivalency) of practical experience needed with manual milling machines and lathes and other equipment in a machining lab (e.g. drill press, surface grinders, band saws); experience setting up, operating, and programming CNC mills and lathes; and with CAD/CAM applications.
3. Experience is needed in machining areas in the courses that are taught.
4. Understanding of and commitment to community college teaching, mission and philosophy.
5. Innovative, flexible and positive teaching style and understanding the needs of students from diverse backgrounds.
6. Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
7. Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
8. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
9. Technology Skills: Ability to integrate computer applications into teaching.
10. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and college objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain collegial relationships with students, peers, staff, and administrators; skill in oral and written communication.

Additional Desirable Qualifications

1. College teaching experience.
2. Master’s Degree in Manufacturing, Applied Technology, Career & Technical Education or related field.
3. Certifications in fields related to advanced manufacturing such as journeyman cards, industry certifications, etc.
4. Experience in multiple manufacturing related fields.
5. Familiarity with the use of competency-based modularized courseware and instruction.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

1. The employee must be able to move about 2/3 of the time and be stationary about 1/3 of the time. S/he is required to be mobile around campus for participant involvement/activities.
2. S/he must be able to converse with individuals on a regular basis with the ability to read, analyze, and interpret their needs via phone conversations, face-to-face conversations, or written documentation.
3. The employee must be able to utilize all programs on a computer independently and efficiently (particularly the internet, Word, and the student database).
4. The employee must be able to operate machinery in a manufacturing environment.
5. S/he must be able to present information in an instructional setting and respond to questions from groups.
6. The employee must be able to lift and move objects of 50 pounds.
7. If applicable, must be able to tolerate frequent exposure to a wide variety of chemicals which are common to the industry. Must be able to handle and mix chemicals properly and safely; and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

Work Schedule

Although full-time faculty are obligated to teach during fall and winter, the nature of their full-time job requires them to perform many of their professional responsibilities year-round.

Faculty are required to maintain engagement hours and will make additional provisions for student consultations as may be necessary and reasonable.
